Rajapaksa, who fled to Singapore, sent his resignation via email
Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled to Singapore after the agitation broke out, has resigned. Protesters are happy with the news of his resignation.
Rajapaksa has sent a letter of resignation to the speaker via email. The speaker has said that he will officially announce his resignation on Friday after completing all the procedures.
He is said to have left the country before resigning because of fear of arrest. Singapore says Rajapaksa has not sought asylum. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore clarified that Rajapaksa was allowed to enter but not granted asylum.
Ranil wickremesinghe, who was the Prime Minister, has been made Acting President while Rajapaksa was on the run, . However, he must be sworn in to formally become the interim president.
