Italian Prime Minister Resigns, President Asks for Reconsideration
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has resigned after the alliance broke down. Prime Minister Mario Draghi has resigned, saying he was in the minority after Democratic Alliance partner Five Star withdrew its vote of confidence.
Draghi, a former head of the European Central Bank, has led the Italian government since February 2021. In a statement issued on Friday morning, he said the treaty of confidence in the survival of the coalition government had been broken.
Meanwhile, President Sergio Matarella has rejected the resignation of Prime Minister Draghi and called for reconsideration.
In the past decade, Draghi, Italy's sixth prime minister, has led Italy to a post-Covid-19 epidemic recovery.
Draghi was praised for playing an important role in saving the country from epidemic instability.
The President has also called on Draghi to address Parliament to present a clear picture of the political situation.
